Faros

A road leads to the cape, 3 klms far, at the very west of the island, with a magnificent view and a lighthouse. The light house of Akrotiri where people can admire the famous sunset of Santorini.

The lighthouse was manufactured in 1892 from a French company of Lighthouses and is found in the end of homonym cape in Santorini ( Thira ) island. It is a square tower, 10m high with house for lighthouse-keepers. It stands at 36 21' 05" & 25 21' 05" at S.W. side of Santorini island, 350 m from the edge and at 100m elevation. The light first worked on 1892 with petroleum. The luminosity was 23 n. m.

During the 2nd W.W. the light stayed dead until 1945 when Hellenic Navy decided to reconstruct the lighthouse network.

On 1983 the light supplied with electric power and operated as warded until 1988 when it completely automated. Now it shines a white light with a flash every 10" and luminosity 24 n. m.

The view from its cliff top position is simply breathtaking, looking out across the caldera and the Aegean Sea !
